End of Year Expectations in the Curriculum

We work closely with other schools in the Vale Academy Trust to ensure our formative and summative assessment is accurate, useful, and rigorous.

Children are assessed throughout the year against the EYEs (End of Year Expectations) for the year group they are working at. The EYEs for English (reading and writing) and Maths are stuck in the children’s books and referred to throughout lessons.

Three times a year children in Years 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 take PIRA (Progress in Reading Assessment) and PUMA (Progress in Understanding Mathematics Assessment). This gives us as standardised score, allowing us to track the progress of individual children and groups. These assessment tests are moderated across the Vale Academy Trust.

Statutory Tests and Assessments

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

This takes place in June every year. Children are assessed on all 44 phonemes and their ability to segment and blend words. If children do not pass the phonics test in Year 1, they have to repeat the test in Year 2.

Key Stage 1

In Year 2 children take statutory assessment tests in English (reading), English (grammar, punctuation and spelling) and maths. These tests take place every year in May.

Key Stage 2

In Year 6 children take statutory assessment tests in English (reading), English (grammar, punctuation and spelling) and maths. These tests take place every year in May.

As always if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress at any point in the school year, please contact the class teacher who will be more than happy to talk you through their progress.
